How to get RadioMatic on your speakers

Updated

The short answer You open your station’s link on a phone, tablet or computer, and you send the sound to your speakers once. On an iPhone or iPad you do that with AirPlay, on other phones with Bluetooth or a cable to your amplifier.

After that every station plays through those speakers. You switch by opening another station, and the connection to your speakers stays in place.

What do you have in your business?

Choose your speakers and what you play from. Then you only see the steps that fit you.

Sonos with an iPhone or iPad

Step 1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad is on the same wifi network as your Sonos. Note: not on the guest network if the Sonos is on the main one. Then open your station’s link in Safari and tap play.

Step 2. Swipe down from the top right of your screen. You now see the panel with what is playing.

Step 3. In that panel, tap the AirPlay icon, the triangle with circles above it, and choose your Sonos. For music in more rooms at once, tick more speakers.

This works on Sonos speakers with AirPlay, such as the Era, One, Five, Beam, Arc, Ray, Move, Roam, Port and Amp. Have an older Sonos without AirPlay? Group it in the Sonos app with a speaker that has it, and it plays along.

Sonos with an Android phone

Android has no AirPlay. With a Sonos Era 100, Era 300, Move or Roam you connect your phone over Bluetooth. Put the speaker in pairing mode, on the Era and the Move with the Bluetooth button on the back, and choose it in your phone’s Bluetooth settings.

With another Sonos, connect a phone or tablet with an audio cable to the line-in of a Sonos Five, Port or Amp. For the Era speakers Sonos sells a separate adapter. Or use an iPad as a fixed device in your business, and AirPlay works.

Chromecast and speakers from other brands

Chromecast on your TV or amplifier. Open your station in Chrome on a computer, click the three dots at the top right, choose Cast and then your Chromecast. The sound of that tab goes to your Chromecast. Leave the tab open.

On an Android phone, choose your Chromecast in the Google Home app and then Cast my screen. The sound comes along. An iPhone or iPad cannot cast to a Chromecast; use AirPlay, Bluetooth or a cable there.

Other AirPlay speakers, for example from Bose, Bang & Olufsen or Denon, work just like Sonos: you choose them in the panel with what is playing. And you pair any Bluetooth speaker over Bluetooth.

An amplifier or sound system

If ceiling speakers hang on an amplifier, connect a phone, tablet or small computer to the line-in. It is often labelled AUX or LINE IN. You use an ordinary audio cable, from the headphone socket to two RCA plugs or to a second small plug. If your phone has no headphone socket, you need an adapter as well.

Rather no cable? Connect a Bluetooth receiver to your amplifier’s line-in and pair your phone with it.

Switch stations with one tap

Put each station as an icon on the home screen of your phone or tablet. On an iPhone or iPad, open the station in Safari, tap the share button and choose Add to Home Screen. On Android, open the station in Chrome, tap the three dots and choose Add to Home screen.

Among your apps you then see, for example, an icon for your morning station and one for the evening. Switching is tapping another icon. AirPlay, Bluetooth or the cable stays connected, so the new station comes straight out of the same speakers.

Three tips for every day

Use a fixed device. An old phone or tablet that stays in your business, on the charger. If someone takes their own phone home, the music stops.

Turn on Do Not Disturb. Otherwise notifications and an incoming call sound through the speakers.

Set the volume at your speakers. Turn the volume on the phone up and set the level in the room on your speakers or amplifier. That way it sounds equally loud every day.

Why RadioMatic is something other than a playlist or the radio

A business owner who wants music on the premises usually picks from three things. A playlist from a streaming service, an ordinary radio station, or a royalty-free music package. This is where they differ.

Questions about sound and speakers

No. RadioMatic plays on what you already have: Sonos, an amplifier with speakers, a Bluetooth speaker or the computer at the counter.
