Background music for yoga studios

Music for your yoga studio, without Buma and Sena

If you are looking for music for your yoga studio, RadioMatic gives you a station with no voice and no recognisable tracks, one that gets new music for every class in the style you pick. Because the music is generated entirely by AI, no payment is due to Buma/Stemra and Sena.

You easily pay

1,056

a year to Buma/Stemra and Sena

If you play music in your business, this bill is compulsory. The amount is the base rate for the worked example below, and your music subscription comes on top of it.

With RadioMatic you pay

€ 29.99

per location per month, billed yearly

= € 360 a year, everything included

The Starter plan, excluding VAT. No payment is due to Buma/Stemra or Sena, so this is the whole amount. There is a free plan as well.

Fourteen days free to try. Monthly billing is available and costs 20% more, and only then can you cancel monthly. Once your application is approved, usually within five working days, your station is live in ten minutes.

What else you get

In a yoga studio you want almost nothing of what a radio station normally does. No presenter over the class, no jingle, no chorus half the room knows the words to. With RadioMatic you switch all of that off and keep the music alone, in the style and at the tempo you pick. The music is generated rather than pulled from a catalogue. So nobody on the mat hears a track they know from somewhere else with a memory of their own attached to it.

You use the voices outside the room. In the reception area, the corridor or the changing area the DJ moments name your studio and play what you type in. For instance next week’s timetable, a workshop on Sunday or that the ten-class card has been extended. That way you tell people differently than with a sheet of A4 by the door. In the room itself you hear only the music.

Advertising from others never comes in between, so no gym chain is advertising during your savasana. If you teach at two locations or rent a second room, you run both from a single dashboard, with a mood of its own for each space.

What does music in your yoga studio cost, and does a class count as foreground music?

Buma/Stemra places a yoga studio in the lower of the two categories of the tariff for mechanical background music. That is because the closed list in the binding tariff text names sports spaces without a hospitality facility. There you pay per square metre, in brackets. Sena puts the same studio under its table for gyms and fitness centres, also per square metre. For a room where one teacher teaches a group of fifteen, that comes out at an amount most people do not expect.

On top of that comes something that is not in the amounts above. Alongside that table Sena has a separate surcharge for foreground music at movement classes. Buma/Stemra writes that the fee for foreground music at movement classes is always calculated separately for the spaces where classes are given. The notes to that surcharge name Zumba, Les Mills and Bodypump as examples. Yoga is not among them, and we are not going to fill it in for you. Is the music during a yoga class foreground or background? Neither organisation gives a written answer to that. If you want certainty about that, ask in writing and keep the answer.

With RadioMatic no payment is due to Buma/Stemra or Sena, because the music is generated entirely by AI and there are therefore no rights holders. Buma/Stemra itself states that works made entirely by AI without a human creative contribution do not qualify for copyright or payment. The same applies to Sena. The law requires a phonogram released for commercial purposes, and on that ground Sena lost in court in 2025. The full reasoning is in our legal memorandum.

The example is a yoga studio of 150 m² without a hospitality facility.

Dan berekenen wij de vergoeding altijd afzonderlijk voor de ruimtes waarin les wordt gegeven.” (Is it foreground music at movement classes? Then we always calculate the fee separately for the spaces where classes are given.), and Sena, 2026 tariff overview, page 12, table Sportscholen / fitnesscentra. Both scales run by floor area up to 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 m². The surcharge for foreground music stands in a table of its own on page 13, with Zumba, Les Mills and Bodypump in the notes, and is not in the amounts above. Amounts per year and base tariff, Buma/Stemra excluding VAT, Sena exempt from VAT and here including the RAAP-PPI surcharge of 26.6%. What you do not want to hear in the room

A yoga class is the rare situation in which music mostly has to stay out of the way. There is one voice in the room and that is the teacher’s. A singer coming over the top of it, however softly, splits the attention. A track that half the group knows does something else. It calls up a place or a time, and that pulls attention away from the pose. What is left is music without words, without sharp entries and without a recognisable verse and chorus.

Within the class something does change. The opening is slower and more open, the middle runs on at an even rhythm, and the last ten minutes ask for something that almost stands still. Do that with a playlist and you are at the phone halfway through to skip ahead, because a track comes by that does not quite fit. With RadioMatic you give a style and a tempo range per part of the day and per class block. The station fills in the tracks itself, without you knowing them and without them repeating.

Outside the room it is the other way round. In the reception area people wait, take their shoes off and talk softly. Silence is not pleasant there, because then everyone hears each other’s conversation and the class that is still going on. Something even at a low level works better there. It is also the place where a short spoken announcement about the timetable or a workshop does its job. You set that per space.

It works on the speaker already standing there

Nothing has to be added. RadioMatic is a stream and plays on what you use. Many studios have one good speaker or a set in the corner with an amplifier, and you connect a phone, tablet or small box to that through line-in. If you have Sonos, the stream plays on Sonos. If you have a Chromecast or work from a laptop at the desk, that works too, because the browser is enough to start.

If you want to hear something different in the reception area than in the room, you put a source of its own there and run both from the same dashboard. If you teach at several locations or rent extra rooms, each space keeps its own mood under one account. After your application is approved, usually within five working days, your station is live in ten minutes. The first fourteen days are free to try.

What you can choose from today

Look for music for your yoga studio and you will not find a provider with a page of its own for yoga. You end up with the sport and fitness offering from Tunify, Synerplay, Backsound and Trend Music. That is made for a gym floor, and not for a room that is meant to fall silent after the last pose.

And with all of them you are playing music by human creators. That means two extra bills, from Buma/Stemra and from Sena. Tunify says itself that for commercial use or in a public environment you need a public performance licence of your own from your local copyright organisation. What that costs is set out above.

With RadioMatic your yoga room gets music alone, with no voice and no tracks anyone knows, and a tempo of its own for each class block, from a calm opening to something that almost stands still at the end. In the reception area you do let your timetable or Sunday’s workshop be heard. If you teach at more locations, you run every space from one dashboard.

Why RadioMatic is something other than a playlist or the radio

A business owner who wants music on the premises usually picks from three things. A playlist from a streaming service, an ordinary radio station, or a royalty-free music package. This is where they differ.

  • New music every day

The station keeps getting new tracks in the same style, because the music is generated rather than drawn from a fixed list. A track that lands well with your audience comes round more often, and then it is your hit. It was made for your station and plays nowhere else.

  • It names your business

Between the tracks, DJ voices announce what is going on at your place. Your offer, your opening hours, this week’s deal. That used to need a studio and a voice actor.

  • It moves with the day

The morning, the rush and the last hour each call for something different. That is set per part of the day and happens by itself, with nobody behind the counter picking a new list.

  • Local news if you want it

A short bulletin on the hour about your own town, with the weather and the traffic alongside. You choose which subjects you want, or you switch it off entirely.

  • No one else’s advertising

On an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us, nothing comes in between that is not yours.

  • Every location from one screen

Each site keeps its own mood, its own promotions and its own opening hours, and you run them all from the same place.

A playlist is worn out within two weeks, and on an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us the station is yours. Your style, your announcements, and the tracks that land with your audience come round more often.

Questions that come with this

For a studio of 150 m² without a hospitality facility that is € 426.81 to Buma/Stemra and € 629.06 to Sena in 2026, € 1,055.87 per year together. Buma charges through category B of the tariff for mechanical background music, which sports spaces without a hospitality facility fall under, and Sena through its own table for gyms and fitness centres. The RAAP-PPI surcharge of 26.6% goes on top of the Sena amount. With RadioMatic no payment is due, because the music is made entirely by AI.
