Looking for an alternative to Synerplay?

Updated

Alternatives to Synerplay with a published price include Tunify, Backsound, My Instore Radio, BusinessMusic.ai and RadioMatic. Mood Media works on quotation. Synerplay itself lists subscriptions on its own pricing page at € 14 or € 29 per month, or € 13 and € 27 billed annually. There is also a music computer at € 449 one-off. When you compare, watch the second bill. On its music rights page Synerplay states that as a business owner you arrange the licences with Buma/Stemra and Sena yourself. That is the case with almost every provider of music made by people. So compare subscription plus levy. With RadioMatic you pay nothing to Buma and Sena, because the music is generated entirely by AI. Buma/Stemra itself says such music does not qualify for payment.

What does Synerplay offer, and what does it cost?

Synerplay delivers music for business premises through an app. You get more than 400 curated playlists, your own playlists, a music calendar for scheduling ahead and full control over the queue. The site lists packages by sector for cafés and bars, restaurants, hotels, retail, salons, offices, sport and fitness, sports canteens, wellness and spa, and waiting rooms.

The pricing page lists Start at € 14 per month and Pro at € 29 per month. Billed annually that becomes € 13 and € 27. A third package, Direct, is announced at € 21 per month or € 20 annually. There are also two extras, the music calendar at € 3 per month and Sonos at € 5 per month. No VAT note appears beside those amounts.

The music computer is a separate touchscreen player at € 449 one-off. That page notes that the price excludes the music subscription and excludes 21% VAT. It is not strictly required, as the service also runs in the app. A 30-day trial is available without payment details.

Are Buma and Sena included in the Synerplay price?

No. Their music rights page puts it in one sentence. As a business owner you are responsible yourself for arranging these licences, through Mijnlicentie.nl. Just above it the page says this applies to every music source, whether you play from CDs, the radio or a business streaming service. For the royalty-free music in their range they also say a Sena licence is needed.

That is not down to Synerplay. With music made by people the fee attaches to the music and not to the supplier. No provider can remove that obligation. For you it does mean that a subscription of € 27 per month is the first of two amounts.

How high that second amount is depends on your sector and your floor area. For a shop up to 100 m² with at most five staff, the 2026 base tariff for Buma/Stemra and Sena together is € 466 per year, and € 608 up to 200 m². For a hospitality venue up to 100 m² it is € 1,952. The full table is on what a music licence costs. The calculator below gives the figure for your own situation.

Which alternatives are there, and what do they cost?

Tunify, part of Soundtrack since February 2026, publishes Simple at € 24.99, Plus at € 34.99 and Premium at € 44.99 per zone per month. Billed annually that is € 22.49, € 32.49 and € 42.49. That same pricing page states that you request the public performance licence yourself from the copyright organisation in your own country. Note the word zone, because two rooms with different music are two subscriptions. More on what Tunify costs.

Backsound lists € 39.95 per month on its site for the Full Pakket including hardware, and € 34.95 for the same package on your own computer. Its question section states that the business owner remains responsible for the public performance permit, arranged online through mijnlicentie.nl.

My Instore Radio charges € 15.49 per month for Lite and € 22.29 for Pro billed annually on its pricing page. It adds that those prices include the statutory licensing for streaming commercial background music, and that licensing for public use of music is not and cannot be included. BusinessMusic.ai supplies AI music and starts at € 15.99 per location per month on its site, with Bespoke from € 24.99 and the note "PRO/PRS rights fees included".

Mood Media publishes no tariffs for the Netherlands and works on quotation. What is public is set out on what Mood Media costs. A longer list of parties supplying business background music in the Netherlands is on background music providers.

How do you compare providers fairly?

Take the monthly amount and multiply it by twelve and by the number of zones or locations. Add the annual levy to Buma/Stemra and Sena. Count hardware separately, because a player at € 449 one-off shifts the first year considerably. Only then do you have figures you can put side by side.

Ask every provider the same question in writing. Is the Buma/Stemra and Sena levy included in this amount, yes or no? If a provider says nothing is payable, ask why. That can mean two things. Either the writers are not affiliated with a collecting society, or there is no human author at all. That difference is worked out on music without Buma and Sena.

Finally, look at what is already installed in your premises. A stream usually plays on the equipment you have, through Sonos, a Chromecast, a tablet or a cable into a spare input on the amplifier. What you need is set out on a music system for hospitality.

What RadioMatic does differently

With RadioMatic you get your own radio station for your business. DJ moments mention your venue by name in each part of the day, you hear local news on the hour, and your own offers play between the tracks. You manage every location from one dashboard, each with its own mood. It plays on Sonos, Chromecast, in a browser or through line-in on the amplifier or PA you already have, so no new hardware is needed. Starter costs € 29.99 per location per month billed annually, excluding VAT. Paying monthly is 20% more. Fourteen days free to try.

The difference is in that second bill. The music is generated entirely by AI, so there is no composer and no lyricist. Buma/Stemra itself states that works made entirely by AI without a human creative contribution do not qualify for copyright or payment. There is no performing artist either. So nothing is due to Sena either, as we set out in our legal memorandum.

Whether we come out cheaper depends on your situation. Work out above what the levy costs in your case. Then you have two figures you can put side by side.

Why RadioMatic is something other than a playlist or the radio

A business owner who wants music on the premises usually picks from three things. A playlist from a streaming service, an ordinary radio station, or a royalty-free music package. This is where they differ.

  • New music every day

The station keeps getting new tracks in the same style, because the music is generated rather than drawn from a fixed list. A track that lands well with your audience comes round more often, and then it is your hit. It was made for your station and plays nowhere else.

  • It names your business

Between the tracks, DJ voices announce what is going on at your place. Your offer, your opening hours, this week’s deal. That used to need a studio and a voice actor.

  • It moves with the day

The morning, the rush and the last hour each call for something different. That is set per part of the day and happens by itself, with nobody behind the counter picking a new list.

  • Local news if you want it

A short bulletin on the hour about your own town, with the weather and the traffic alongside. You choose which subjects you want, or you switch it off entirely.

  • No one else’s advertising

On an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us, nothing comes in between that is not yours.

  • Every location from one screen

Each site keeps its own mood, its own promotions and its own opening hours, and you run them all from the same place.

A playlist is worn out within two weeks, and on an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us the station is yours. Your style, your announcements, and the tracks that land with your audience come round more often.

Questions about Synerplay and alternatives

According to its pricing page, € 14 for Start and € 29 for Pro per month, or € 13 and € 27 billed annually. A third package, Direct, is announced at € 21 or € 20. The music calendar costs € 3 per month and Sonos € 5. No VAT note appears beside those amounts. For the € 449 music computer the page says the price excludes 21% VAT and the subscription.
