Background music for your hair salon, without Buma and Sena
If you are looking for music for your hair salon, RadioMatic gives you a station of its own that moves all day with whoever is in the chair. Because the music is generated entirely by AI, no payment is due to Buma/Stemra and Sena.
You easily pay
€ 692
a year to Buma/Stemra and Sena
If you play music in your business, this bill is compulsory. The amount is the base rate for the worked example below, and your music subscription comes on top of it.

What else you get
A hair salon usually runs on a playlist someone put together once and that nobody has looked at since. Your client hears it for an hour. Your staff hear it for eight hours a day, five days a week. With RadioMatic the music is generated rather than pulled from a fixed list. The style stays the same, the tracks are different every day. Your client may not notice. The stylist behind chair three does.
Between the tracks the DJ moments name your salon. That is where your own announcements go, without a studio or a recorded voice track. For instance that you are open until nine on Thursdays, that a new treatment has been added or that clients can book online. You type it in and you hear it on the next round, in the voice you pick. Want music only for a while, then you switch the voices off.
On the hour a short news round can follow with what is happening in your town, with the weather alongside. People talk at the chair, and a local item gives your client something to carry on talking about. Advertising from others never comes in between, so the salon two streets away is not advertising in your shop. With more than one location you run everything from a single dashboard. Each salon keeps its own mood and its own announcements.
What does music in your hair salon cost? It depends on your number of staff
This works differently from what most owners think. At Buma/Stemra a hair salon does not fall under the ordinary background music table. There is a tariff of its own for personal care, which also covers beauty treatments, pedicure and nail care. Under it you pay per member of staff in the treatment space and not per square metre. On mijnlicentie.nl a hairdresser is therefore not asked about floor area. A salon of forty square metres with eight chairs pays more than a salon of a hundred and twenty with two.
Sena also charges per member of staff, but draws the lines in a different place. You will want to know that before you take someone on. Hire a sixth member of staff and your Sena bill doubles. The Buma bill only moves at eleven. If music plays in more than one room, both organisations add your staff together. So they do not charge per room.
With RadioMatic no payment is due to Buma/Stemra or Sena, because the music is generated entirely by AI and there are therefore no rights holders. Buma/Stemra itself states that works made entirely by AI without a human creative contribution do not qualify for copyright or payment. The same applies to Sena. The law requires a phonogram released for commercial purposes, and on that ground Sena lost in court in 2025. The full reasoning is in our legal memorandum.

Music you can work next to for eight hours
A hair salon has a sound problem most businesses do not have. There is almost always a hairdryer running and water flowing. At the same time someone in the chair is talking to the stylist, sometimes about personal things. The music has to fit in between without anyone having to raise their voice. What works for that is an even level without sudden peaks, and tracks in which the vocals do not keep asking for attention. An ordinary chart list does exactly the opposite, because there the dynamics are in the peaks.
The hour matters too. In the morning it is quieter and the clients are often older. The late afternoon and Saturday are busy and younger. Many salons put something calm on in the morning and then forget to change it, because nobody at the desk has time to go looking for another list. With RadioMatic you set what you want to hear per part of the day, and after that it runs by itself. If you have a barber section or a separate wash area, something else can play there.
Your staff hear the music longer than anyone. A client sits for forty minutes, a stylist stands there all day. Repetition stands out to them first, and then the question soon comes whether the radio can go on instead. A station that gets new music every day in the same style takes that question away. And you do not bring the ad breaks of a commercial station into your salon.
It works on the speakers already hanging there
You do not have to replace anything and you do not have to buy anything. RadioMatic is a stream. If you have Sonos, the stream plays on Sonos. If you have a Chromecast hooked up to an amplifier, that works too. If there is an ordinary amplifier with a line-in, you connect a phone, tablet or small box to it. If everything at your place runs through the computer or tablet at the desk, you simply open the station in the browser.
If your salon has two sound zones, the cutting floor and the wash area for instance, you put a source of its own in each zone and run both from the same dashboard. With several locations each salon gets a mood of its own under one account. After your application is approved, usually within five working days, your station is live in ten minutes. The first fourteen days are free to try.
What you can choose from today
Look for music for your hair salon and you end up with Synerplay, which has a page of its own for salons. Backsound and Tunify offer a package that is the same for every sector.
And with all three you are playing music by human creators. That means two extra bills, from Buma/Stemra and from Sena. Tunify says itself that commercial use requires your own public performance licence from your collecting society. What that costs is set out above.
With RadioMatic the stylist behind chair three hears different tracks in the same style every day. In the morning something calm plays and on a busy Saturday something livelier, without anyone at the desk having to change a list. If you have a barber section or a separate wash area, it gets a mood of its own.
Why RadioMatic is something other than a playlist or the radio
A business owner who wants music on the premises usually picks from three things. A playlist from a streaming service, an ordinary radio station, or a royalty-free music package. This is where they differ.
| Playlist | Ordinary radio | Royalty-free | RadioMatic | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New music | Fixed list | Yes, but not your choice | Limited catalogue | New every day |
| Music that is yours alone | No | No | No | Yes, your own hits |
| Fits the time of day | Switch it yourself | No | Switch it yourself | Automatic |
| Names your business | No | No | No | Yes |
| Your own offers | No | Only if you buy advertising | No | Yes, with no studio |
| Local news and weather | No | Yes, the station’s | No | Yes, your town, your choice of topics |
| Other people’s adverts | No | Yes | No | No |
| Buma/Stemra and Sena | Payable | Payable | See the terms | Not payable |
New music every day
The station keeps getting new tracks in the same style, because the music is generated rather than drawn from a fixed list. A track that lands well with your audience comes round more often, and then it is your hit. It was made for your station and plays nowhere else.
It names your business
Between the tracks, DJ voices announce what is going on at your place. Your offer, your opening hours, this week’s deal. That used to need a studio and a voice actor.
It moves with the day
The morning, the rush and the last hour each call for something different. That is set per part of the day and happens by itself, with nobody behind the counter picking a new list.
Local news if you want it
A short bulletin on the hour about your own town, with the weather and the traffic alongside. You choose which subjects you want, or you switch it off entirely.
No one else’s advertising
On an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us, nothing comes in between that is not yours.
Every location from one screen
Each site keeps its own mood, its own promotions and its own opening hours, and you run them all from the same place.
A playlist is worn out within two weeks, and on an ordinary station the business down the road advertises in between your tracks. With us the station is yours. Your style, your announcements, and the tracks that land with your audience come round more often.
